COLWYN BAY & DISTRICT CRICKET LEAGUE
(Founded 1965)
WEEK 14: Monday 30th July - Wednesday 1st August 2007
Ysgol Pen Y Bryn were this week celebrating only their second ever Division 1 title when they claimed the single point needed from their match with Rydal Penrhos. Rydal themselves still had title aspirations going into the match and Josh Leach's 51(retired) set them up leaving the champions elect 141 for victory. However, knowing that Rydal had to bowl them all out to stand any chance of winning the league, the Pen Y Bryn batsmen dug in to claim the single point required thanks mainly to stubborn batting from experienced duo Derek Klazinga and Chris Rowley as they mustered a mere 43 runs from their allocated overs. This was never a game for the purist but Ysgol Pen Y Bryn were unfazed in their quest for the point they needed. The following night Pen Y Bryn hosted Abergele CC and restricted the visitors to 73 runs, a total the champions passed in the 13th over to give them a final lead of 4 points over second placed Rydal Penrhos.
Mochdre CC ended their Division 2 season unbeaten with an 84 run win over club-mates Mochdre Colts. Batting first, the Second Division champions piled on the runs, Adam Campion (51ret) and Sean McHale (40) the principle scorers in their total of 180-5. Brothers James (23) and David Hawley (15) top-scored for the Colts but tight bowling led by Stuart Jones (3-21) restricted the reply to 96-9.
Mochdre CC now know their opponents in the Robertson Cup Final after Mochdre Colts travelled to Llanrwst to play their semi-final tie. Llanrwst CC batted first and struggled to 81-8, Matt Coleman (40not out) easily their top-scorer, with Ritchie Palmer (4 for 29) and Dan Parry (3 for 8) the pick of the bowlers. However, 82 runs became a daunting target for the Colts as good bowling by Glyn Tapp (4-12), Alex Frew (2-7) and Huw Williams (2-8) restricted their opponents to 41-8 as Llanrwst CC claimed their place in the Robertson Cup Final by 40 runs.
Like Mochdre CC, Caerhun are also looking for a League and Cup double. Already Division 3 champions, they entertained Penrhyn Arms in the Tom Barlow Cup semi-final to see if they could book their place in the final against Lex XI. Caerhun batted first and scored a competitive 104-7 before ensuring a 14 run victory by restricting Penrhyn Arms to 90-9 in reply.
Penrhyn Arms faired better in their final Division 3 match as Tom Barrett's 33 ensured victory over Conwy Colts to leave Penrhyn in fourth place with 20 points to end their first season in the Gilbert Emery League on a high. The Division 3 derby between the Celts and Colts of Conwy provided one of the most entertaining games of the season. Conwy Colts were first in to bat but were all out for only 67 runs thanks to inspired bowling from Natalie Heap (3-26) and Laura Lambe (3-12). It was Heap (17) who led the Celts reply ably supported by Hugh Kelly (22) but just as victory looked certain they were left stranded on 67-8 at the end of their 15 overs to ensure a tie between the teams. The extra bonus point earned by the Celts ensured a second-place finish, one point above the Colts in third.
