WEEK 4: Monday 21st - Wednesday 23rd May 2007

The May rain eased as Week 4 of the Gilbert Emery Evening Cricket League saw the 2007 league tables begin to take shape. New Rydal Penrhos Secretary Huw G. Roberts hit 41 unbeaten runs to lead his team to a total of 125-6 before bowlers Rhys Williams (3-10) and Huw D. Roberts (2-16) restricted Rhos Fynach Taverners to 70-7 in reply. Rydal claiming a first win of the season by 55 runs. Ysgol Pen Y Bryn leapfrogged Abergele CC to top Division 1 thanks to their 56 run victory at Pentre Mawr. Batting first, Pen Y Bryn scored 129-6 thanks to positive batting by Chris Rowley (46not out) and Derek Klazinga (39). Abergele promptly lost a wicket in the first over of their reply to place them onto the back foot, Andy Spillane taking 3-19 from his 4 overs. Carl Barrett set about the PYB bowling hitting two successive sixes before becoming the first of 3 victims to fall in one over from Darren Dentith to ensure his team a 5 point victory.

Two Second Division matches were unfortunately won by walkover. Mochdre CC and Bryn Y Neuadd celebrated 5-0 wins as Colwyn Bay Rugby Club and Lex XI each failed to raise a team. In the only match played, Robertsons batted first at home to Mochdre Colts and scored 112-7, Dan Wilde (25), Russell Harris (24) and Simon Otto (21) their main run-scorers. James Hawley took 4 wickets for only 24 runs before scoring 28 runs as the Colts chased victory. Adam Jones' unbeaten 50 leading Mochdre Colts to secure an 8 wicket win.

League Chairman Colin Proffitt produced the Division 3 bowling performance of the week in. leading his team Caerhun to a 12 run win over Penrhyn Arms. Gethin Rowland (32n.o) helped Caerhun to 102-8 despite tight bowling by Tom Barrett (3-22). K.Rigby (26) top-scored for Penrhyn Arms as they chased their maiden league win before Proffitt took the ball. Five wickets for 14, and a dropped catch off his own bowling, ensured that Colin Proffitt's Caerhun went to the top of the table as Penrhyn were restricted to 90-9. An unfortunate mix up regarding the date of their fixture gifted Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry victory over newcomers St. David's College. Solid batting by Phil Davies (52ret) and Dan Davies (26n.o) alongside tight bowling by C.Wareham (3-12) enabled Conwy Colts to celebrate a 36 run victory over club rivals Conwy Celts.

The College batted first and Neil Roberts (52ret) top-scored in their total of 115-5. Nearest rivals Ysgol Pen Y Bryn began their match against Rhos Fynach Taverners by scoring over 50 runs in 5 overs until the heaven's opened and their match was abandoned as a draw.

Penrhyn Arms were celebrating their first ever league win with a Third Division victory over Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry. Batting first, Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry managed to battle their way to 52 runs before being bowled out-Tom Barrett taking 3 wickets for 4 runs. A superb knock of 35 not out by Bobby Nellist in the damp conditions was enough to see Penrhyn Arms home despite struggling at 25-8 at one point thanks to superb bowling by Alan Vaughan (5-9). Their maiden victory also lifts The Penrhyn Arms off the bottom of Division 3. Steve Jones' top-score of 46 not out proved the main difference between Caerhun and Conwy Celts. Caerhun's 28 run victory giving them a healthy 11 point lead at the top of the Third Division. Second placed Conwy Colts saw their match with St. David's College abandoned.

A third consecutive 50+ score by Mochdre's Phil Dickson helped his team to a comprehensive 83 run win over Lex XI to move 8 points clear at the top of Division 2. Russ Boswell also scored 51(retired) as Mochdre CC accumulated 176-5 from their 15 overs, Alex Owen stemming the tide claiming 2 for 12. Joel Lloyd (23), Alan Sale (23) and Luke Regan (22) all looked settled for Lex in reply but good bowling by Will Evans (3-10) helped ensure a massive Mochdre win. Mochdre Colts aided their clubmates push for promotion by thrashing second placed Bryn Y Neuadd by 84 runs at a wet Bethesda. Adam Jones (51ret) and Matthew Hunt (51ret) were the chief run-scorers as the Colts piled on the runs to finish on 169-4 from their allocated overs. Only Steve Meek (36) had any resistance to the quality bowling on display by Joe Chaplin (4-11) and Adam Jones (4-24) but the Colts had to wait until the final ball of the match to take Bryn Y Neuadd's last wicket and claim a bonus point.

WEEK 9: Monday 25th - Wednesday 27th June 2007

Rain decimated the Gilbert Emery Evening Cricket League with only two matches beating the weather. Ysgol Pen Y Bryn welcomed Llandrillo College to Brackley Avenue and the damp outfield produced a low scoring, yet entertaining, match. The College won the toss and elected to bat but consecutive maiden overs by Richie Lewis and Darren Dentith put the pressure onto a Llandrillo team still searching for their first win of the season. Andy Spillane (3-14) and Chris Rowley (2-14) maintained the good bowling as the College were restricted to 72-7 from their 15 overs, Wasim Ali (22) easily top-scoring before being clean bowled by Rowley. Pen Y Bryn opener Chris Spillane's golden duck in the first over gave the College hope and runs proved hard to come by thanks to tight bowling from Colin Bradley (1-4) and Neil Bryan (1-5) in particular. The highlight for the fielding side was a tremendous one handed catch on the long-on boundary by Anwar Awan to remove Chris Rowley for only 4 runs. However, Rowan Rosenthal carried his bat to finish on 41not out, including 3 fours and a six, to guide his team to within a point of Division 1 leaders Rydal Penrhos as Pen Y Bryn passed their total in the 14th over for the loss of 5 wickets.

In the other match played Conwy Celts celebrated their first win of the season with an 8 wicket victory over Penrhyn Arms to move them off the bottom of Division 3 into third place. Unfortunately the League Secretary did not have any further details of this match at the time of going to press.

Unfortunately the 2007 John Hardman Sixes was washed out on Sunday at Conwy Cricket Club. Six teams had registered to play: Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry, Conwy Colts, Llandrillo College, Lex, Rhos Fynach Taverners and Ysgol Pen Y Bryn, but a saturated outfield and persistent showers put an end to any hope of play. Thanks to Eddie Downes and Conwy CC for their efforts.

The June meeting of the Management Committee sat this week and two teams have been punished for blatantly breaking League Rules. Caerhun and St.David's College played their Week 12 fixture on Tuesday of this week (Week 9) but failed to have their re-arrangement approved at the May meeting and took it upon themselves to play the game early without the consent of the Committee leaving both clubs in breach of Rule 14. The Committee frowned upon this and decided to utilise Rule 13e-the match was declared a 0-0 draw with both teams deducted 5 points for their breach of the rules. (Subject to appeal)

WEEK 10: Monday 2nd - Thursday 5th July 2007

Week 10 proved to be another damp week with all but one of the matches washed out. Caerhun's Tom Roberts top-scored with 48 runs in the Division 3 leaders' match with Conwy Colts to extend their lead at the top. Unfortunately no other details were sent in. Following on from the June Committee's decision to dock points for re-arranging fixtures without consent Caerhun have decided to appeal the ruling at the next meeting (July 27th). Unfortunately, St. David's College have stated that they simply cannot accept the Committee's decision and, instead of exercising their right to appeal, have withdrawn from the League and Tom Barlow Cup for the 2007 Season. The League Secretary finds their decision puzzling and hopes that they reconsider. It is yet to be seen whether or not St. David's College will be entering a team in 2008.

WEEK 11: Monday 9th - Wednesday 11th July 2007

Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry's failure to raise a team for their Division 3 match with Caerhun gifted their opponents a 5-0 win which leaves them only a point away from an immediate return to the Second Division. Colwyn Bay Rugby Club's 5 wicket victory over 10 man Bryn Y Neuadd looks certain to cement their position in Division 2 for next season. In a low scoring match at Brackley Avenue, Bryn Y Neuadd were all out for 67 runs from the final ball of their 15 overs - 18 extras being their top score! Good bowling by Robbie Hughes, taking 3 wickets for 15runs, helped keep a lid on BYN scoring. Ian Morris (20) top-scored for the Rugby Club in their reply but good bowling by Joe Carribine (3-20) and Nathan Hales (1-12) made the home team work hard for their 3 wicket victory with only 2 balls to spare.

Ysgol Pen Y Bryn went top of the First Division as they aim to claim the title for only the second time in their history. Llanrwst CC batted first and posted a score of 110-6 thanks to a half-century (51retired) by Alwyn Williams. Richie Lewis (2-21) and Darren Dentith (2-23) were once again the pick of the Pen Y Bryn bowlers. Dave Williams (25) and Derek Klazinga (33) put the title chasers on the brink of victory but both were dismissed in quick succession to leave PYB needing 9 runs off the final over. Youngster Kieron McMillan promptly claimed a wicket before successive boundaries by Tony Earley put his team 2 points clear at the top of the table.

Lex XI secured their place in a third successive Tom Barlow Cup Final with a 5 wicket win over Conwy Celts in their quarter final tie. James Wigzell (33) and Luke Regan (16n.o) top-scoring for the Division 2 team. Lex progress to the final as St. David's College have withdrawn from the cup due to their on-going protest with the League.

Llandrillo College's disappointing season continued as they were knocked out of the Robertson Cup by Second Division leaders Mochdre CC. The College scored 97-5 from their 15 overs thanks to Wasim Ali (27n.o), Aamer Sarder (25) and Anwar Awan (23) but opening batsmen Adam Campion (49n.o) and Russ Boswell (39n.o) led Mochdre to a 10 wicket victory and line up a home semi-final against either Ysgol Pen Y Bryn or Abergele CC.

WEEK 12: Monday 16th - Thursday 19th July 2007

MOCHDRE CC CROWNED DIVISION 2 CHAMPIONS! After two seasons as Division 2 runners-up Mochdre Cricket Club were finally celebrating promotion to the First Division as Champions thanks to an 8 wicket win over second placed Bryn Y Neuadd. Bryn Y Neuadd were restricted to 93-7 from their 15 overs, Jez Shea top scoring with 35 runs and Adam Campion's 3-13 the highlight for the bowling team. Will Evans' unbeaten 41 led his team to victory, promotion and the Second Division Championship. At the other end of the table, only victories in their remaining two fixtures will save Robertsons from relegation following their massive 103 run defeat by Colwyn Bay Rugby Club. Neil Wilkinson (35) and Bob Blackwell (36) hit the runs as the Rugby Club scored 138-7 before tight bowling by Tom Blackwell (4wickets-5runs) dismantled Robertsons reply for a mere 35 runs.

A fine all round display by Paul Anderson was not enough to prevent defeat for Penrhyn Arms in their low-scoring match with Conwy Celts at Bodlondeb. Penrhyn Arms batted first but were all out for only 41 runs, 18 of which were scored by Anderson, as Derek McFee (2-1) and Nick Davies (3-9) took advantage of the damp track. In reply, the Celts lost 7 wickets on their way passed the required total with Paul Anderson's 4 wickets for 4 runs off 4 overs the undoubted highlight. A third score over 50 for the season by Phil Davies helped Conwy Colts to a total of 149-5 against Bodelwyddan-Tŷ Fry. The away team secured a bonus point despite only mustering 56-9 in reply as the Colts claimed victory by 93 runs.

Llanrwst CC moved away from Division 1 relegation trouble thanks to a 46 run victory over Rhos Fynach Taverners. Matthew Coleman's unbeaten half-century helped the home team post a total of 114-5 before Huw Williams' 4-10 helped dismiss the Fynach for only 68 runs and drag them into the relegation battle. Llandrillo College were finally celebrating their first win of the season to give them a chance of remaining in Division 1 next season. The College scored 116-9 from their 15 overs against title contenders Ysgol Pen Y Bryn thanks to solid batting from Aamer Sarder (37not out) and Anwar Awan (33) combined with 5 dropped catches!! Andy Spillane (4-16) and Richie Lewis (2-24) came close to earning a bonus bowling point for Pen Y Bryn but the College hung on. Mark Jones' left-arm seamers out of the sun proved too much for the Pen Y Bryn batsmen as he claimed 2-5 from 3 overs with Chris Spillane (17not out) and Derek Klazinga (29) unable to attack as much as they wished. College recorded a massive 50 run victory but still need to beat Rhos Fynach in their final game to stay up.

Ysgol Pen Y Bryn and Mochdre Colts moved into the semi-finals of the Robertson Cup with victories over Abergele CC and Bryn Y Neuadd respectively. Ysgol Pen Y Bryn scored 88-8 (Chris Spillane 32; Graham Price 4-21) at a damp Pentre Mawr before restricting the home team to 62-9 (Darren Dentith 2-16; Chris Rowley 2-17). Mochdre Colts dismissed their opponents for 107 (Jez Shea 45) before passing the Bryn Y Neuadd total in the 14th over thanks to 51(retired) from David Hawley and 25 from Ross Stevens.
